Hildaberry Permaculture Farm & Nursery Spring Newsletter 2023

As we enter the spring of our fourth year on the farm we are pleased with the incredible progress we have made and we are excited for all there is yet to come. We would like to start by thanking everyone who has supported us in this journey so far. Being a two person operation we work tirelessly to bring plants and produce to Columbia County and we couldn't do any of it without YOU! Your support of our farm allows us to continue our mission of providing unique and interesting plants and produce locally. In turn, we spend much of what we earn at other local businesses when we purchase our supplies. Buying local is not just a trendy phrase, it is a way to strengthen and support the people of the community in which you live. We believe this is one of the most beautiful places to live, and we feel very fortunate to call this beautiful river valley home.

Thank you!

What's new?

In 2021 we applied for three planned conservation practices through the USDA, including a high tunnel, rainwater collection system, and pollinator hedgerow plantings and we were chosen to receive the grant for all three projects!!! Last July, we broke ground on the first project, the high tunnel, and we were able to complete it by October. We are beyond excited to be able to extend our growing season in the spring and fall and for our vegetable production to be less susceptible to the ever changing and rather unpredictable weather. This years planned conservation project is our pollinator hedgerow. We have been planting starts and propagating various native varieties to bring even more bees, butterflies, beetles, flies, wasps and birds to the farm. We are so grateful to have received funding to help us implement environmentally conscious practices that will contribute to our farm’s ecosystem health and lessen our overall impact on the environment. Stay tuned!

Besides the addition of the high tunnel, we have also prepared five new beds for this growing season. This will allow us to grow more of the staples that everybody loves. Also, in addition to our CSA, we have plans to offer produce to the general public this year. We have some very exciting news on the way, look for those announcements in our summer newsletter!

Nursery production

If you haven't visited our website lately, please go to our nursery page to view all of the vegetables, edibles, annual flowers, and perennials that are or will be available to purchase soon. We are making great strides in increasing our plant inventory each year with the goal of providing a reliable source of interesting and hardy plants to our community. You can find our plants for sale at The Real Deahl Gift Store at 254 N. Columbia River Highway in St. Helens.

Looking to the future, we hope to provide wholesale plants to landscapers and landscape designers. We are working towards having a wholesale availability list, with access to purchase plants directly from our farm. If you are a landscaper or landscape designer, or know someone who is, we would love to collaborate and grow specific plants for your needs. Please contact us - we would love to hear from you!

Save the date!

Below are confirmed events that we will be attending this season. Set a reminder in your calendar so you don't miss these two opportunities to support the farm, say hello to us, and take home some amazing plants. We hope to see you there!
